Sharon Horgan Talks the Joys and Embarrassments of Motherhood & Working With the Late Carrie Fisher

Catastrophe star and writer Sharon Horgan is not one to shy away from the tough questions. Talking to SheKnows for our “What’s in My Box?” series, the British-Irish actress opened up about her iconic shows and the many adventures of motherhood.

“That night in the hospital was amazing, best night of my life,” she said of the day she gave birth to her first daughter Sadhbh, now 18. ” It was when all of the nurses went away and my husband f***d off and it was just me and my baby and it was genuinely the best night of my life.” Horgan also shares daughter Amer, 14, with ex-husband Jeremy Rainbird.

For her, the “oh my god, I’m a mom” moment happened that same night. “When my baby came out of my vagina I think,” she said laughing. “It was shocking, I wasn’t expecting it and then I was like ‘oh my god, I’m a mom.'”

As for her journey as a mother since then, she describes it as the song “Also Frightened” by the band Animal Collective. Her most recent screw up was when she bought her daughter a phone but forgot to order the SIM card. “Now she thinks I’m a piece of s**t,” she says.

As if that wasn’t relatable enough, Horgan said she embarrasses her kids “every single day” willingly or not. “I’m desperate for them to want my company and they just don’t,” she said. We feel you, Sharon!

Horgan also talks about working alongside the late Carrie Fisher in the first few seasons of Catastrophe. “I’m looking at her with so much love,” she said of the picture of the two with fellow co-star Rob Delaney. “I just couldn’t believe that she agreed to be on our show. We think she thought maybe she made a mistake, she just turned up. She wanted a bit of a break in London and do a bit of antique shopping. We absolutely loved her and she came back and did two more seasons.”

Horgan appears to have countless amazing memories from her time in the show, a sitcom that ran for four seasons from 2015 to 2019. She explained that her dress for the final scene was handmade for her and she was so mad at herself that she had to take it off. “I was so angry with myself,” she said, before describing the final scene between her and Delaney’s character.

Also in the segment, Horgan talked about Bad Sisters, her most recent project about the tight-knit Garvey sisters who get investigated by life insurers after their brother-in-law dies. According to the star, much of her writing for the show was trying to “capture what it is to be in a large family” – something she’s well aware of having two sisters and two brothers. “I could rely on any of them to murder for me,” she said, noting that if not, they’d “at least punch a cheeky bar man” for each other.

In another video, Horgan also revealed which co-stars would be good and bad accomplices and which ones would rat her out in many of her other projects. And yes, one of her answers is, “There’s just something about him that I think he could have what it takes to murder.”
