Fleishman is in Trouble Stars Adam Brody & Josh Radnor Reveal the Surprising Lessons They’ve Learned About Marriage
There are two sides to every marriage. And two sides to every divorce. We get to see them both in Fleishman is in Trouble, a new limited series on FX, starring Claire Danes, Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Brody and Josh Radnor, based on the book by Taffy Brodesser-Akner. SheKnows chatted with the cast at the New York City premiere and found out a few lessons they learned about marriage from this project, how they’d do in the online dating game, and what drew them to this show. Fleishman centers around the relationship – marriage and divorce – between Toby and Rachel Fleishman, played by Eisenberg and Danes, and manages to flips the story upside down and stealthily makes you root for different characters throughout. Brody weighed in on what he leaned not only from this project but his own marriage to Leighton Meester, “An appreciation! As I learned early in my marriage, and you will always re-learn it, an appreciate for the other point of view.” Brody plays Seth Morris in Fleishman, and once played Seth Cohen on The O.C. So many Seths, so little time! We asked him which Seth he would want to be trapped on an island with. Let’s just say, one of those Seths would be in tears hearing his answer.
When asked what advice he’s have for Toby and Rachel, Radnor laughed and said, “I’m not qualified to give advice!” But then he confessed that his big takeaway lesson about marriage from this project, “Don’t keep score, don’t hold resentments…. Everyone’s right, sometimes people are wrong, a lot of times, but both sides have their perspectives.”
Danes and Eisenberg shared what they love most about the project and how the book and show so brilliantly capture both sides of the Fleishman’s story. “The thing I love most about it is the way it talks about gender you know the way audiences have sympathy for a man by default, but more grudgingly gain sympathy for a woman,” Eisenberg notes. Danes reveals her friend gave her the book to read and the rest was history.
Brodesser-Akner revealed that if she had to be trapped on an island with Toby and Rachel, she would absolutely pick Rachel and then compared her to Wilson, the volleyball that Tom Hanks is trapped with in Castaway. But it’s a compliment! As for online dating, Caplan, Danes and Eisenberg all basically said, “No, thank you!” Watch the video to find out their real thoughts on online dating and marriage. Fleishman in Trouble premieres November 17 on FX.
