Following the astronomical success of Daisy Jones & The Six, another one of author Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novels is making it to the screen. On April 7, the romance drama One True Loves, starring Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey, will be coming to theaters.
The story follows Emma (Soo), who lost her husband Jesse (Bracey) after he disappeared in a tragic helicopter crash on their first wedding anniversary. Four years later, Jesse returns after being stranded on a desert island only to find that Emma is engaged to her childhood best friend Sam (Liu). Who will she pick to live the rest of her life with? I guess we’ll have to tune in and see!
Soo and Bracey spoke exclusively to SheKnows about their upcoming movie and showed us how well they got along with each other and the rest of the cast.
When asked what song would describe each other, they couldn’t name a specific song, but they did an impressive job describing them. “Something about someone being nice and bubbly and kind and fun to be around,” Bracey tells of a song that describes Soo. “If I were to describe you in a song, it would be starting out with a good intro, like a hook and you’re like, ‘Wait, what is this?’ and then the beat drops in and there’s an incredible bridge,” the Hamilton alum says. “It’s a feel-good song, it makes you laugh, makes you think back on good times.”
As for what song would describe their co-star Liu, Soo says his song “would be right out of the gate strong.” “Upbeat, fantastic, and then maybe in the middle it would mellow out a little bit and then back on by the end,” Soo adds.
Even though choosing a specific song stumped them, the Holidate star was quick to answer who he’d bring from the cast to a deserted island. “Michaela [Conlin] to make us laugh,” he says, adding that the actress playing Emma’s sister in the movie is “a bloody riot.” As for what single object they would bring, Soo was also quick to reply. “I think I would bring a piece of fruit because, go with me here, I could eat it and then I could save the seeds and then grow food for myself,” she says, with Bracey whole-heartedly agreeing.
When it comes to the concept of love at first sight, the two also share some similar opinions. “Sometimes,” Bracey tentatively says. Soo quickly adds, “It depends, I feel like love at first sight is possible but doesn’t necessarily have to happen.”
“I feel it’s possible but I don’t know if that’s where lasting love is always going to be, I think you can maybe fall in love at first sight and then grow with someone, and that love can be sustained, right?” Bracey explains, with Soo quickly chiming in. “I feel like you have to choose to love someone every single day,” she says. “It’s a way to be present, to remind yourself that it’s not only wonderful to be with this person, but there’s work involved and it takes two.”
In the film, Emma slowly grieves the disappearance of her husband by reading books. Since the movie is also a book adaptation, we asked if there’s any novel that has really moved them. “I read an amazing book when we were filming this… called The Master and Margarita,” Bracey remembers of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. “I remember reading it when we were filming this movie and I couldn’t put it down.”
Soo, on the other hand, remembers Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. “I feel like it was one of the first epic family novels that I had read in a very long time,” she says. “And, of course, having Asian stories told is always one of my favorite things.”
Lastly, before giving too much away, Soo and Bracey answered which team (Team Jesse or Team Sam) they were on. “I’m on ‘Team Everyone’ because I think that’s the whole point of this film which is that we’re rooting for everyone,” Soo says. “‘Team Everyone’ in the way that, they’ve all got to find their place to be and their journey and if they do that they’re going to be alright,” Bracey agrees.
Find out for yourself who you’re rooting for when the movie hits theaters on April 7. You can also find it digitally starting April 14 and on-demand on April 28.
