Marin Hinkle & Caroline Aaron Break Down How They Are (& Are Not) Like Their The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Characters

Since 2017, Marin Hinkle and Caroline Aaron graced our screens as Rose Weissman and Shirley Maisel in the Prime Video hit The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And, as viewers from around the world gathered to watch and root for their characters, the actors themselves got to know them better too. Now, with the fifth and final season to premiere on Prime Video on April 14, the two actresses looked back at their time on the show and opened up about the main differences and similarities they share with their hilarious characters.

“I’m unlike my character because I find her incredibly courageous,” Two and a Half Men alum Hinkle tells SheKnows. “Incredibly able to jump into new things and try new things and not be fearful of judgment and take charge,” she says, adding that these are qualities she tries to “emulate” in her own life. “I’m working on it, it’s a work in progress,” she admits. “I find that she’s inspired me.”

As for what Hinkle and Rose have in common, the actress says it’s “an utter sense of absolute love for her children and her partner.” In the show, Rose is married to Abe, played by Tony Shalhoub, and is mom to Midge (Rachel Brosnahan). “I’m a mom myself and that kind of absolute, above and beyond, all else in the world is [my] child,” she says, “I think that’s where I merged with my character.” Hinkle has one college-bound son named Ben.

Aaron, who coincidentally also has a son named Ben and a daughter named Sydney, also spotted some major similarities between herself and her character. “Here are the ways in which I’m like Shirley: I’m a woman, I’m Jewish, I’m married, I have children,” the actress explains. “Here’s how I’m not like Shirley, I have no talent at any domestic art,” she says, adding she doesn’t “cook” or “clean” around the house.

“The first year I was married, I said to my husband, ‘I’m so sorry that I’m not like a wife,’ and he said, ‘Do you think if I was looking for a wife, I would have ever married you?'” she recalls of her husband of many years James Foreman.

“Shirley is the ultimate wife in a sense that she has taken the domestic arts to a place of artform as far as I’m concerned,” Aaron adds.

“She also has no boundaries whatsoever, which I love,” she continues. “She is not self-referential, she’s not going to bed at night going, ‘Oh my God, maybe I shouldn’t have said that,’ which is what keeps me up,” Aaron says, adding that “none of that keeps Shirley awake.” “As a matter of fact, I don’t think she really has any trouble falling asleep. She really is very happy with herself and with her choices and with her family. I think that she feels like a lot of people did in New York during that time period, really lucky to be part of the American Dream.”
