Outlander Star David Berry Reveals Lord John’s Relationship with Claire & Jamie Gets ‘Complicated’ in Season 7
Before the Outlander season 7 premiere aired, the cast of Outlander, including Sam Heughan, Caitríona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, Maril Davis, and David Berry celebrated their new season at Tribeca Film Festival. Berry, who plays Lord John Grey, caught up with us on the red carpet. Lord John has been hopelessly in love with Jamie Fraser since he was a young soldier, who tried to murder Jamie while Jamie was using the loo, or peeing against a wall as Jamie is known to do in big emotional first meetings, He told us all about where his character is in season 7, especially when it comes to his relationship with Jamie and Claire. We also asked him, if he had to pick a love theme song for his character, what it would be. Let’s just say, he delivered the best red carpet karaoke in history. Correct, history. Watch the exclusive video to hear Berry dropping the best Outlander single, second only to Caitríona Balfe singing “Ave Maria” in the trailer episode. And of course, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin’s duet of “Oh My Darling, Clementine” in season 5.
As many know, Lord John has loved Jamie for a long, long, unrequited time. Jamie knows, Claire knows. Even Brianna probably knows. Lord John hearts Jamie, and not time, space, travel, or Claire can ever change that. We asked Berry to think of a song that might describe where Lord John’s love life is headed in season 7. Before we knew it, he was singing, “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling,” in a way that would make The Righteous Brothers proud. Even though, we may have all accidentally credited the Everly Brothers. Oops. “You’ve lost that lovin’ feeling, now it’s gone, gone. Gone,” Berry emphasized. Before singing his heart out on the carpet, Berry said this of Lord John, “There’s no love in season 7, he’s getting his heart broken, he’s hit rock bottom.” Oof. Imagine poor Lord John throwing back some whisky and belting out, “Sing me a song of a Lord John that’s gone…”
As for what he thinks might be Lord John’s ideal happy ending on Outlander, Berry chose chaos, and said, “Maybe… it’s in bed with Jamie Fraser. I think he needs a night with Jamie Fraser.” Jaw drop, mic drop, all in one single sentence. We asked, “What do you think Claire would say to that?” Berry answered swiftly, “I don’t care what Claire says, she doesn’t have to know,” then staring deep into the camera, Berry repeated, “She doesn’t have to know.” Claire will know. There’s pretty much nothing she doesn’t know.
Since we know where Lord John and Jamie’s relationship stands, how about his relationship and dynamic with Claire? Berry only had this to say, “Three words, I’m just going to say, like a Facebook status, “It’s complicated. It’s very complicated.” And then he said this line 3 times. Whoo-whee, Jamie. What is about to happen? Also, that’s technically 4 words, David Berry. But Outlander fans aren’t here for the math. For those who want to know what Berry might be referring to, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books might be for you. Check out the full video chat to appreciate Berry’s red carpet crooning. You won’t regret it.
