John Bell Teases Season 7 Outlander Love Story & Working with Sam Heughan, Caitríona Balfe & Mark Lewis Jones
Ever wanted to see a man in kilt with a tiny mic singing love songs on a red carpet in New York City? Well, Outlander star John Bell delivered exactly that performance at the Outlander premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. Joined by Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, David Berry, Izzy Meikle-Small, Joey Phillips, and more, Bell chatted with SheKnows to give us a little tease about the new season, which premiered this past weekend. Bell hinted about his own character’s love story this season by singing a song. He also shared some of his favorite parts about working with Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. And finally, Bell dropped a new dance inspired by what if Jamie and Claire could make a TikTok. And all we will say is move over, Biebs. John Ring my Bell has got you beat. If you haven’t seen the first episode of season 7, catch up with our recap. John Bell and Young Ian are about to blow your kilts off this season. Mark me.
In season 5, Young Ian returned to Jamie and Claire after having joined the Mohawk to save Roger for his cousin Brianna. But a sad Ian returned, and in season 6, we learned he had been married and lost a child. What is it with the poor Fraser dudes not getting a chance to be fathers. Jamie and Ian bonded over their common losses, Ian’s daughter, and Jamie and Claire’s Faith. In turn, Ian has spent the last few years single and sad. Though he did the Fraser’s Ridge garden frolic with Malva, who is now sort of the garden herself. Rest in peace, Malva Christie. But when we asked Bell to sing his character’s love song for this season, he belted out, “You’re just too good to be true, can’t take my eyes off of you,” then added, “you’ll find out what that means later.”
A lot of Bell’s scenes are with Balfe and Heughan, as his characters Aunt and Uncle, and season 7 is no different. Not wanting the Bell musical to end, we ask what would Young Ian sing as Jamie and Claire’s love song. Not one to turn down a challenge, Bell thought about it and then sang out, “Love. Love will keep us together.” Anyone else think Fraser’s Ridge deserves a karaoke night? Between Balfe, Heughan, Berry, Skelton, Rankin and Bell, even Rollo and Adso could get in on it.
As for working with Balfe and Heughan, we asked Bell what his favorite moments might be. Bell confessed, “I’m obsessed with Caitríona, she’s like a big sister to me, she keeps me right, she puts me in my place when I need to be put in my place. I can’t pick one! She’s amazing.” Bell was so excited he broke the mic, or rather he Balfed it. The microphone couldn’t deal with that Big Balfe energy. As for Heughan, the mic came back to life so everyone could hear he loves every moment with Heughan too, but in particular, he loved that he, Heughan and Mark Lewis Jones got to open the season 7 premiere with their scene.
The best part of Bell’s red carpet appearance is when we asked him if Jamie and Claire had access to TikTok, what would their signature dance move be? And let’s just say, this was the night Ceilidh Bieber was born. Watch the exclusive video chat to see the dance and find out what Bell had to say about the behind the scenes photo of Balfe, Heughan and him taking a little nap in bed.
