Ilana Glazer & Michelle Buteau Talk Babes, Babies & Swearing in Front of Their Kids
Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau first met years ago on the stand-up comedy circuit. It was then that they recognized the same light and joy in each other, according to the two comedians. Buteau and Glazer sat down exclusively with SheKnows to talk about their new movie, Babes, co-written by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, starring Buteau and Glazer as best friends, Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau), dealing with growing up and raising babies. Hasan Minaj plays Buteau’s husband, Marty, who rolls more like their supportive third wheel, in comparison to the deep friendship between the two childhood friends. Watch the video to see exactly why their real-life friendship and humor makes Babes 90 minutes of pure joy. Look out for a line that Glazer screams while in a cab, that might be one of the best comedic moments of 2024.
When asked what their first impressions of each other were, Buteau screams, “I don’t remember! It’s a blur, like you’re doing 3, 4, shows a night for a drink ticket and getting on 5 subways, to try 2 new jokes! I just remember seeing light and love and energy.” Glazer quickly continued, “Same, same! And feeling safe! Not only a safe space, but Michelle creates a safe space to f-ing laugh! Michelle is so funny, it’s very easy to be drawn to her, just sort of move closer and closer.”
Casting Buteau as her best friend basically happened while Glazer was sleeping. “When Michelle Buteau came to mind, I could not let it go, I became obsessed. We were seeing Michelle’s face in our dreams.” Glazer then embarks on a long ode to Buteau. And Buteau’s response is perfect, “What in the wedding speech is going on?! That is so sweet, I’m like Patrick Swayze in Ghost, ‘Ditto.’” Their real-life chemistry translates well on-screen and drives the movie. So much so that when they have a big best friend fight, you want to jump through the screen and help they make up.
Buteau, Glazer and Minaj are all parents to young children, so we decided to find out what their real parenting style was by asking a few questions, such as who’s most likely to stick to a schedule. Glazer and Buteau proclaim all three of them are schedule parents. No schedule is no good. But when it came to who calls the pediatrician more than they should, Buteau and Glazer chimed in, “Not me,” in unison. Then Glazer added, “Let’s put it on Hasan.” But since Minaj wasn’t there to say, this might not be true. When asked if they swear in front of their kids, Glazer said, “Definitely not Hasan.” Ah, redemption. But then the answer they both gave for themselves is just a lot of bleeped out joy. So that’s your answer.
