Evan Williams Breaks Down Why His First Kiss With Chyler Leigh in The Way Home Was ‘Movie Magic’

Over its two seasons, The Way Home has given fans a series of unforgettable and nail-biting moments. From the moment viewers found out what really happened to Colton (Jefferson Brown), to when Kat (Chyler Leigh) and her brother Jacob reunited (Spencer MacPherson), the show has given fans twists and turns enough to put them at the edge of their seats for season 3.

But, while we all wait to see the Landry family back in action, SheKnows sat down with Evan Williams, who plays Elliot on the show, to talk all things time travel, kissing scenes and, of course, the incredible Leigh and Andie MacDowell.

“Chyler and I have such a natural chemistry with each other that we both feel so lucky,” Williams gushes of his co-star, who has a tumultuous will-they-won’t-they connection with him onscreen. “And we have the exact same sense of humor.”

“There’s so many times when we’ll be across the room and we’ll just be able to communicate with just a look in a way that makes me feel like we’ve been friends for 20 years,” Williams adds of the Grey’s Anatomy alum.

Speaking of his connection with Leigh, Williams gave the inside scoop of what happened behind their long-awaited first kiss.

“We were planning to shoot that behind the house in the shadows and I asked the [Director of Photographer]… ‘Why don’t we shoot this in the meadow? And he was like, ‘Oh, no, we can’t we’re gonna lose the light into that,'” he remembers. Soon after, however, the DP saw the golden-hour moment happening and couldn’t resist.

“It’s one of those sort of movie magic scenes, we didn’t have a chance to rehearse it or anything like that we just sort of went all cylinders blazing and they had the camera just moving around us,” Williams details. “And that turned out so beautifully.”

“That’s what’s cool about television is like every once in a while you take a risk like that, and it can fall apart or it can make something that’s going to last forever,” he adds. “And I think that kiss was pretty indelible.”

Speaking of his other co-star, the Hollywood icon MacDowell, Williams was just as complimentary. “Adam McDowell is so quintessentially herself that she’s undefinable,” he says of the actress, who plays the matriarch of the Landry family, Del.

“I watched Groundhog Day for the first time on the plane a couple of weeks ago –I just have managed to never have seen it– and I was floored,” Williams says. “She was so good in it and she has not changed one bit.”

“In between takes she’s so disarming and just easy and flowing and she’s so forthcoming with her with their positive reinforcement as well,” Williams adds. “She really makes us feel that not only do we belong there and deserve to be there but that we’re doing a good job.”

“That’s exciting to feel like a teammate and if you have a teammate like Andie MacDowell you’re unstoppable,” Williams says.
