Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu Just Nailed Why Her Character Sylvie in Emily in Paris Is So Iconic

While Lily Collins‘ Emily in Emily in Parismight be the first character we think of when we hear of the Netflix hit, loyal fans know that Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie is quite a scene stealer. After all, whether it’s through Sylvie’s sexy Parisian style or her ruthless clapbacks, we’re always raving about Sylvie’s confidence and elegance.

Speaking to Leroy-Beaulieu herself at the Paley Center’s Emily in Paris: The Magic Behind the Scenes event on Sept. 18, the French actress admits that even she’s learning a thing or two from her character.

“She inspires me,” she says.

According to her, a lot of Sylvie’s badass self comes from the show’s creator, Darren Star. “He writes really confident women, really whole women that have a masculine and feminine side that’s very balanced so that’s what gives them that kind of confidence and kind of experience too,” she says, before quipping, “And the French!”

Online, fans of the show can’t get enough of Sylvie, with some even asking for a prequel series about her backstory. Leroy-Beaulieu, for one, is already onboard. “Sylvie in New York would be wonderful,” she says, already created the title of the spinoff. “There’s a lot to say.” We hope Star’s listening!

Speaking to Star himself, he agrees that his characters are all well-rounded, even making a comparison between Emily and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie in Sex and the City (another show he created).

“You know I think they’re both strong, independent women that aren’t afraid to make mistakes in their life,” he says. “I can see a little Carrie in Emily, the younger version.”

Also talking to Star, we asked why he chose Rome, Italy, to be Emily’s next European destination. “For me, Rome is like the other romantic city in Europe and I wanted to live vicariously,” he says. “When you’re in Europe, people aren’t just in one city so I just have to expand the footprint and the universe of the series.”

We can’t wait for season 5!
