Coolhaus Founder Natasha Case Spills Her Kid-Snack Hack & It Involves Eel, Not Ice Cream

If you’re not yet familiar with Coolhaus yet — well, you should get familiar, stat. Because ’tis the season…for ice cream, and Coolhaus has the sweet stuff in spades. And is there anything better than ice cream? Why yes, there is: Ice cream made by a woman-founded company led by Natasha Case and her wife Freya Estreller. The pair live in Los Angeles and co-helm Coolhaus, which they launched more than a decade ago because they “did not feel represented by any of the dessert brands on shelves… not as Millennials, not as women, and definitely not as gay women,” Case and Estreller explain.

These days, when the entrepreneurs aren’t building their ice cream empire, they’re in child-chasing mode as moms of two: 3-year-old Remy, and brand-new baby Nico, who was just born in April and whom Case says is “a very sweet and pondering little lady.” We caught up with Case to pick her brain about the products (and snack hacks) she relies on to make it all work — momming, ice-creaming, and all. And she’s got some good ones (with a few surprises thrown in).

The podcast I’m currently listening to

“Mostly I love NY Times’ The Daily and Today Explained. But next on my list is the podcast by Esther Perel. I read about it in The New Yorker and it sounds fascinating!”

The books my kid is currently obsessed with

Truman’s L.A. Adventure (my mom wrote and illustrated it!). Remy cannot get enough of it. I promise he’s not biased!”

What I’m reading myself right now

“My favorite reading is long-form New Yorker essays — always so well-written, thoughtful, detailed. The next essay I have bookmarked is about innovative things South Korea is doing to save the planet.”

The snacks I always keep on hand for my kid

“The more under-the-radar, the better! Remy loves roasted seaweed, dark chocolate — bars and PB cups (I love Lily’s sugar-free), kale chips. And, this is so random, but eel unagi from the sushi stands at Whole Foods.”

The beauty product that’s always in my bag

Dermalogica vitamin C serum, clean/ocean-friendly sunscreen, and Urban Decay matte lipstick called ‘Alpha‘ — my sister, who is super knowledgeable about beauty, picked it out for me, and I’m obsessed.”

The apps that make my life as a parent easier

“Google calendar — haha! And Mint. It’s so important to keep your finances in order when you’re a couple with multiple businesses, investments, properties, and…two children!”

The mom accounts I love to follow on Instagram

“Half my Instagram feed is fellow parents, so that about does it.”

The non-screen activity that occupies my kid for hours

“Our keyboard. Remy loves music! Also, my parents got him an antique train set for his third birthday…March 4. He is obsessed!”

What I actually enjoy watching with my kid

“So many Disney moves are multi-generational enjoyment: Coco and Moana especially.”

The kid-friendly music I don’t hate playing around the house

“I’m getting tired of the Moana soundtrack but still not cutting Remy off, especially because he calls the movie ‘Na’s boat.’ But mostly in the evening we listen to jazz. Yes, I’m that mom.”

My favorite subscriptions for me & my kid

Baby Mama Box, and Disney+.”

My go-to kid bath products

“This cheek balm by Erbaviva that came in the Baby Mama box — it’s great because Remy constantly has a runny nose and is wiping it on his cheeks (gross, but any mom knows it happens…), so his cheeks get very dry. This balm hydrates the skin and clears up the dryness immediately.”

How I dress my kid

“Honestly we really try to stick with hand-me-downs as it’s the most eco-friendly move. For gifts though, we love buying funny political tees for our friend’s toddlers!”

How I keep my mom wardrobe on point

“My Lunya silk cropped shirt and pants PJ set or silk romper are epic for around the house — or anywhere you want to take it!”
