Yum! Vegan Junk Food

While your friends might think of all vegans as granola-munching herbivores, chowing down on tofu and kale salads, you know that image doesn’t really reflect the modern vegan. Lane Gold, author of Vegan Junk Food: 225 Sweet, Salty, and Scrumptious Treats for the Ultimate Pig-Out! (Pig Not Included) offers fabulous vegan solutions so you can slip in undetected with your omnivore friends. We caught up with Gold to learn more about her vegan cookbook and her upcoming involvement in the Green Festival in LA at the end of this month.

Miso Vegan: What exactly is vegan junk food?

Lane Gold: For me vegan junk food may be a bit of a misnomer as it might imply food that is strictly bad for you but in my definition it is food that you crave from gooey just out of the oven chocolate chunk cookies to rich Boston cream pie, baked spiced sweet potato fries or kale chips.

Miso Vegan: What inspired you to write your book Vegan Junk Food?

Lane Gold: I was inspired to write the book to underscore the misconception about what vegan food is. While my family eats its fair share of kale and we have a massive garden that feeds us, vegan food is also vegan chicken pot pies and un-meatball subs, it’s French fries and nachos, too.  It isn’t all sprouts and sunflower seed cheese, although those are awesome; sometimes you want to dip your apple slice into a bowl of warm vegan caramel dip and it’s great we as vegans have those options.

Miso Vegan: What will vegans learn by opening up Vegan Junk Food?

Lane Gold: My hope is that people will simply have fun cooking comforting food and in the process learn some easy and delicious alternatives to dairy, eggs, cheese and meat in everyday recipes.

Miso Vegan: What is your favorite vegan junk food recipe and why?

Lane Gold: I would have to say my favorite recipe from Vegan Junk Food has to be the Boston Cream Pie, it’s very much what I remember the non-vegan version to be and it comes together rather quickly.  Pretty much anything covered in chocolate ganache is my favorite.

Miso Vegan: You’re involved in the first ever Green Festival in LA. Can you explain what the festival is all about and what you’ll be doing there?

Lane Gold: Green Festival is the nation’s premier green event making its debut in Los Angeles, Saturday, October 29th and Sunday, October 30th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It features eco seminars, sustainable food, green shopping, music, an organic food court, an organic wine and beer garden, and many cooking demos. I will be at the Good Food Stage on Sunday at noon making some recipes from my book. It’s going to be an amazing weekend for LA’s green community.  Can’t wait and I hope to see you there!
