HSUS versus Smithfield Foods
Last week, the HSUS filed a complaint against Smithfield Foods with the SEC alleging that the purveyor’s living conditions for its pigs are cruel and unusual, citing reports of pigs covered in blood and sows being confined to tiny gestational grates, which are illegal in some states.

According to the Huffington Post, this isn’t the first time animal rights‘ groups has targeted Smithfield for its animal welfare practices. In December 2010, the HSUS got ahold of gruesome footage of a Smithfield Farms facility, leading respected figures like Mark Bittman to call for a boycott of meat from the company.

The Huffington Post also reports that in addition to the McRib’s “rib” meat being various other animal parts, the chemical additives that bind the sandwich together are also used for keeping yoga mats springy and shoe soles white.
