Lower your cholesterol with portfolio diet

Did you know nearly 2,500 Americans die each day from heart disease? One way to reduce your risk of heart disease is to lower your cholesterol levels. A new study shows that the “portfolio diet” is more effective in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol than a diet low in saturated fat. Here’s more on the portfolio diet.

What is the portfolio diet?

According to WebMD, the portfolio diet includes four types of FDA-recognized foods that lower cholesterol.

Cholesterol-lowering foods include:

    t
  • soy protein — swap in for meat
  • t

  • sticky fiber — fill up on fiber-rich oats, barley, and psyllium
  • t

  • plant sterol esters — substitute plant sterol ester enriched margarine for butter or non-enriched margarine
  • t

  • nuts — eat a handful of tree nuts each day

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,  showed that people with high cholesterol who followed the portfolio diet experienced a 13% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels after six months. Participants in the study who followed a diet low in saturated fat had a mere 3% reduction in LDLs.

Good news! The vegan diet is heavy on the portfolio diet foods, which puts vegans ahead of the game when it comes to heart-healthy eating.
