Did you know that only 10 percent of home owners feel highly organized? That’s an unsurprising fact from a survey conducted by California Closets. But organizing is so overwhelming! Did you know that only 10 percent of home owners feel highly organized? That’s an unsurprising fact from a survey conducted by California Closets. But organizing is so overwhelming! To help us embrace National Spring Cleaning Week (March 19 – 25) with confidence, California Closets’ chief design officer Ginny Snook Scott offers a seven-day plan to a more organized closet.
One week can help you year round
If you cringe every time you have to walk in your closet, it’s time to get de-cluttered. You should enjoy your closet time since it is the hub of your daily attire. A dreaded, cluttered closet is likely bleeding over into your sense of style, too. Ginny suggests using National Spring Cleaning Week to take back your closet and keep it organized all year.
7 Days to an organized closet
Monday: Clear out your closet
Ginny suggests starting the week by ditching what you don’t need. She says, “That sweater you wore to a Christmas party in the ‘80s? Donate it. You can’t make room for new memories with all the old stuff piling up.”
Tuesday: Let technology help
Did you know that you can use your smartphone as an organizing tool? “Download customized style apps such as Cloth, Sylitics and Swivel, all which provide a way to digitally coordinate your outfit based on your specific wardrobe,” encourages the organizing expert.
Wednesday: Group your clothes by color
Ginny explains, “Not only will this create a gorgeous rainbow effect, it will help you remember where each piece of clothing belongs, making everything easier to find.”
Thursday: Organize your fashion accessories
Fashion accessories you can’t find aren’t doing your sense of style any good. Ginny suggests organizing items, such as scarves, belts, gloves, or purses, vertically so you can see what you have instead of being frustrated at the messy pile of accessories that you don’t want to sift through.
Friday: Line up your footwear
Your footwear is meant to be stepping into, not stepped on. “Put your best foot forward,” Ginny says. “Organizing your shoes is critical to a clean closet, so get your shoes off the ground and store in an accessible location.” You can put each pair in a clear shoe box and stack boxes or buy shoe hangers that keep footwear off the floor.
Saturday: Be a seasonal organizer
Having to rifle through sweaters and jackets to find that perfect sun dress for summer will certainly put a damper on your warm weather excitement. Ginny says, “Store all your out-of-season items out of the way so every season can sparkle.”
Sunday: Set the mood
You don’t live in your closet but you do visit there daily, so make it an inviting home space. “Replace that bare light bulb with a small chandelier or fixture a floor lamp to make your closet feel like a boutique,” adds Ginny.
