National Can-It-Forward Day: Have a canning party

Gather your friends and a bounty of ripe fruits and vegetables and have a canning party to celebrate National Can-It-Forward Day on July 14.  Here are Ball’s tips for hosting a home canning party this weekend and a few of our favorite canning recipes to get your started.

Can-It-Forward party tips and recipes

1. Pick a location

Depending on how many canning friends you want to invite, choose a comfortable and functional location for your home canning party. Select any spot with a working stovetop and some counter space. Consider your kitchen first and, if it seems too cramped, seek out a community center or another kitchen space that is large enough.

2. Invite your friends

Spread the word about your Can-It-Forward party, inviting your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. You can invite them via Facebook and talk it up on Twitter #canitforward

3. Select your recipes

The experts at Ball recommend making Mixed Berry Jam but we have these recipes to choose from:

    • Jams, jellies, and chutneys — oh my
    • Homemade Strawberry Jam

4. Determine quantity

Decide how many jars you’ll make and make sure you have enough jars and ingredients.

5. Print out labels

Visit FreshPreserving.com and print out Ball’s intro to canning guide, party tips guide, and lid labels.
