Let’s face it, many of the foods that even vegan guys love to eat may not be healthy for them. The best vegan foods for men are going to help them retain muscle mass, prevent heart disease and prostate cancer, and boost their sexual health. Cardiology expert Dr. Joseph Keenan recommends that men put the following foods high on their must-eat list.
Bananas

Bananas contain very high levels of potassium, which the body uses to regulate nerves, heartbeat and blood pressure. “When men are stressed, our potassium reserves tend to deplete,” says Dr. Keenan. “Eating a banana is a healthy way to replenish our supply.”

Plant sterols

“To help manage and maintain healthy cholesterol levels, a man’s diet should include at least 10 grams of soluble fiber daily, and one gram of plant sterols twice daily,” recommends the heart health expert. “Plant sterols work to help block cholesterol absorption into the bloodstream and effectively help eliminate cholesterol from the body. which ends up lowering the amount of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood.” Dr. Keenan suggests food products made with Corowise brand plant sterols.

Brazil nuts

These jumbo nuts are big on health benefits. Researchers are finding that men who eat nuts regularly tend to have lower LDL cholesterol. Brazil nuts are also packed with magnesium and selenium, which are antioxidants associated with prostate health. Dr. Keenan adds, “Just be cautious because nuts are also high in fat and calories, so they should be eaten in moderation.”

Whole grains

Complex carbohydrates are typically lower on the glycemic index (GI), which means they have a smaller impact on glucose levels. Dr. Keenan recommends whole grains because “they help men stay full longer and less likely to experience energy slumps.” In addition, whole grains provide fiber, vitamins, minerals that support weight loss, muscle building and heart health.

Blueberries

Blueberries can boost brain health by slowing age-related decline in brain function. “Blueberries’ deep color is caused by flavonoids, which are natural compounds that help protect the brain’s memory-carrying cells,” explains Dr. Keenan. He recommends snacking on blueberries as well as swapping them in as a healthy dessert.

Sesame seeds

For men concerned about libido, Dr. Keenan suggests adding toasted sesame seeds to salads, cooked grains, or cereals as a safe and inexpensive alternative to prescription medications. “Sesame seeds contain arginine, an amino acid involved with synthesizing nitric oxide, a compound that enhances blood flow,” says the medical expert. You can also reap more sesame seed health benefits by eating hummus — which is made with tahini (ground sesame seeds).
