Keep your pet’s weight in check

Did you know that over half of adult dogs are overweight? A study conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention shows that 53 percent of dogs are classified as overweight or obese by their veterinarian but that pet owners don’t see their pets as being heavy. To help raise awareness during National Pet Obesity Month, dog food experts at Bil-Jac have a few helpful tips for pet owners to help their pets maintain a healthy weight.

1. Annual check-ups

Make sure you take your furry friends to the vet at least once a year for a check-up. It can help with early detection of diseases and can alert you if your dog (or cat) is tipping the scales.

2. Feed your pet a balanced diet

Talk to your vet or another pet professional about how to serve your pet a nutritionally balanced and complete diet. Also, be aware that as your pet ages, his nutritional needs will change.

3. Exercise your pet

It is recommended that pets get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Take your pawed pal on walks or runs or engage in active playtime.

Pet exercise tips:

    t
  1. Walking is better for an older dog while running is ideal for high-energy puppies.
  2. t

  3. If exercise is new to your dog, walk or run her on soft surfaces such as dirt, sand, or grass until her pads toughen up.
  4. t

  5. Keep your dog on a leash during walks or runs.
  6. t

  7. Avoid exercise immediately after mealtimes so your dog doesn’t experience digestive upset.
  8. t

  9. Be aware that dogs can suffer heat stroke and frostbite just as people do.
  10. t

  11. If you’re exercising in a wooded area, check your pet’s eyes, coat, and paws for ticks, dirt, and seeds.
  12. t

  13. Train your dog to walk at your side to teach control so that he won’t jump on children or go after other dogs.
