If you’re in parts of the country already under gray skies with rain or snow, you probably aren’t thinking too much about the importance of sunscreen but you are likely already feeling the change of seasons in your skin. November is National Healthy Skin Month and we’ve got five tips to help you tend to your skin this month and year round.

Healthy skin tips

Wear sunscreen

You may think sunscreen is only necessary when tanning on the beach or lounging by the pool, but even in the winter months the sun’s rays can still be damaging to your skin. A heavy sunscreen may not be necessary but make sure to use a moisturizer containing at least SPF 15 everyday. Try the jane iredale Dream Tint Tined Moisturizer SPF 15 ($36).

Moisturize all over

Having healthy skin doesn’t only mean having a blemish-free face, make sure you aren’t neglecting the rest of your body. Every morning after you shower and at night before bed you should be applying moisturizer to your entire body to keep skin hydrated. Also, it won’t hurt to keep a bottle of lotion in your bag or on your desk at work for moisturizing your hands throughout the day. Slather on suki skincare intensive nourishing cream ($61) daily for smooth, supple skin.

Eat for your skin

The foods you eat are as crucial to your skin health as the products you apply to your skin. You already have an antioxidant-rich advantage by following a vegan diet…as long as you pile fruits and vegetables onto your plate every day. In addition, eating a diet that is filled with omega-3s, whole grains, and B Vitamins is essential to maintaining your skin’s youthful glow.

Stay well-hydrated

Whether you’re in the heat of summer or dead cold of winter, keeping up your hydration level is essential to your overall health as well as the integrity of your skin. Drinking adequate water helps flush out toxins in your system, which in turn helps get rid of unwanted acne and blemishes. If plain water doesn’t appeal to your thirst, try a no- to low-calorie flavored water, such as HINT ($2), which is free of sugar, artificial flavors, and preservatives.

Get your beauty sleep

We know you’re busy but your need for sleep shouldn’t be ignored. You need to get seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Not only will getting your Zs boost your energy and overallhealth, it will reduce your risk of dark circles and puffy eyes, and keep your skin looking fresh and relaxed.
