Whether you’re in the throes of holiday shopping or waiting for the next leg of a cross-country flight, certified nutritionist Isabel De Los Rios of BeyondDiet.com shares her top healthy, easy to tote, on-the-go snacks.

Work snacks

Guacamole and veggies

De Los Rios loves guacamole. “It contains heart healthy fats from the avocados and is very filling and satisfying,” she says. “Instead of dipping chips in it, cut up some celery and carrots along with some cherry tomatoes.”

Almond butter and celery or apple slices

Pack a small container of raw almond butter in your purse. “The combination of protein and healthy fat in the almond butter will keep you from feeling hungry while working away,” the nutritionist suggests. “Enjoy some of an apple that is full of fiber and you’ll be able to focus on your work and not on your hunger.”

Travel snacks

Raw nuts

A handful of nuts can go a long way to quiet tummy grumblings. “Raw nuts are easy to carry and require no refrigeration or heating,” says De Los Rios. “Pair them with some unsweetened dried fruit for a trail mix. The combination of healthy protein, fat and carbs will keep you from reaching for those unhealthy, oil laden trail mixes sold at the airport.” Nuts that are roasted and cooked in oils contain oils that can go rancid from the heating process.

Leftovers

Leftovers don’t have to stay home while you travel. Pack them up and take them on the plane to nosh in flight or at the airport. This is a great money saver since airport food is terribly overpriced, adds De Los Rios.

Shopping snacks

De Los Rios suggests starting the day with a high-energy protein smoothie and then packing your own snacks. “I always make muffins (made from healthy flours like almond flour and coconut flour) on the weekends to ensure I have healthy snacks throughout the week,” she says. “I bring a muffin and a baggie of raw pecans with me while I shop.”
