Snowy day activities for kids

When there’s a blanket of snow for as far as the eye can see, it’s tempting to stay huddled up in the house and forgo the cold. But your kids need exercise — and a way to run off all that extra energy — and typically don’t mind the chilly temps as much as you do. Bundle up and try these fun outdoor activities in the snow.

Take a walk

Not feeling all that adventurous? Then take a walk around the neighborhood or to the local park. Walking and breathing in fresh air is just the beginning of the fun. Take in the beauty and use the jaunt as an educational experience for your kids — talk about the weather, winter activities of animals, importance of dressing appropriately to avoid hyperthermia, etc.

Snowmen, snow angels, and snowball fights

You don’t have to go far to enjoy the snow. Your front or back yard is piled with snow just waiting for kids wanting to build snowmen and make snow angels. And who doesn’t want to throw snowballs? Divide into teams and have snowball war or make up your own snowball throwing game.

Sledding

Sledding is a universally loved snow activity that can be done anywhere there is a clearing and terrain slant. Have sled races down as well as races to see who can get their sled up the hill the fastest.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is cheaper and safer than skiing, especially when it comes to a family outing. Invest in kids-size snowshoes that coordinate with your kids’ boots. Snowshoes often come with poles, too. Make sure you adjust the poles to match each of your children’s height.

Skiing

Now we’re talking snow adventures. Whether you downhill or cross-country ski, take full advantage of the snowy season to ski with your family.

Right now as you look out the window, you may not feel motivated to play in the snow, but once you start having fun, you’ll forget about shutting the blinds and hiding for the winter.
