There’s nothing like starting the new year fresh in a new home. Whether you rent or own, moving is never easy and can try your patience in ways you never thought possible. Start the new year and your move in a cool, calm, and collected state of mind. Here’s how.

1. Change your address

Go to the post office (or online) and pick up a mover’s guide to put in a change of address, starting the day you move or even a day or two before if possible. Then make the change with your credit card company, bank, utilities, and any other companies that you use. Get this out of the way early so it is one less thing to worry about when you’re in the throes of packing and unpacking boxes.

2. Get moving boxes — for free

Go to your local supermarket or another business that uses boxes. You can also peruse Craigslist for moving boxes (then use it to get rid of yours!).

3. Pack carefully

Use bubble wrap, paper, foam and other materials to adequately wrap your breakables. Keep like items together as you pack. An easy way to pack clothing is to roll it and place it in boxes or use the extra space in luggage (you’re taking it with you anyway).

4. Label your boxes

The easiest way to unpack is to know what’s in your boxes. Label boxes so you can move them to the right rooms when you arrive at your new abode.

5. Make sure your furniture fits

Measure your furniture to make sure that it is actually going to fit in your new place. You can even do a floor plan to determine the best arrangement.

6. Get help

Lots of hands make light work. Recruit family and friends to help you pack items into a moving van and then into your new place.

7. Take a deep breath

Don’t expect to have your new place in perfect order right away. Take a deep breath then take some time to unpack and enjoy your moving-in experience.
