Are you already suffering from spring fever and ready to start deep cleaning and refreshing your home space? Dr. Kristen Bobik, founder of Balance Chiropractic and Wellness, warns against common storebought cleaning products and offers healthier, more natural cleaning solutions.
Chemicals in your household cleaners
Dr. Bobik, who is part of the Chicago Healers network, says that common household cleaning supplies, such as Dial, Febreeze, and AJAZ contain dangerous chemicals like choloform, triclosan, and formaldehyde.
Healthier hand soap
According to Dr. Bobik, many anti-bacterial products contain triclosan, a known cancer-causing substance. “It is in facial washes by Clearasil, Phisoderm and Clean and Clear,” she explains. “It is also found in Dial Liquid handsoap, Pampers Kangaroo Pump Hand Soap, Colgate mouthwash, Cosmetics by Revlon and Jason Natural, and deodorants by Old Spice and Right Guard.” Solution: Dr. Bobik suggests making your own hand soap (made from liquid Castile Soap, vegetable glycerin, tea tree oil, citrus essential oil and distilled water) or “Kiss My Face” peace soap.
Healthier air freshener spray
Do you Febreeze? Dr. Bobik warns that Febreeze Air Effects has 89 separate air contaminants alone—including formaldehyde and phenol, which are used to preserve cadavers.
Solution: “Replace storebought items with a homemade version using witch hazel, essential oils and water or a diluted Melaleuca “Sol-U-Mel,” which is an all purpose cleaner,” she says.
Healthier laundry
Dr. Bobik says that dryer sheets can contain chloroform, a dangerous chemical (often used in the movies as an anesthetic) that is also used as a solvent and refrigerant. Chloroform is also the precursor to the Teflon on our pots and pans. The alternative health expert says dryer sheets may be the most dangerous of your household products.
Solution: Instead of dryer sheets, put 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the washing machine per load. “It keeps clothes longer, cleanses them, and softens and doesn’t smell,” she adds.
Healthier cleaners
If you are used to using AJAX as a powder cleaner, Dr. Bobik says you can simply use baking soda and water with comparable and safer results. She also warns against using CVS Fume Free Heavy Duty Oven Cleaner and to replace it with baking soda and water.
