Opt for a nontraditional color scheme
The vast majority of Christmas decor appears in shades of red, green and gold, and so you might feel obligated to use this color scheme for your holiday table setting. Don’t! According to Michael J. Skaff, vice president of design at FTD.com, the flower experts, holiday style can include many different color schemes. “Another option to consider is using cooler tones such as purples and blues. You can accent the table with silver pieces for an enchanting look or deep chocolates, giving it a sophisticated, yet inviting display,” he says.
Mix flowers with other elements found in nature
Flowers, often used for centerpieces, can be complemented by a variety of inexpensive elements to create a festive, stunning look for the holidays. Skaff says, “Adding different elements along the length of the table runner in between each bouquet is another wonderful way to add interest to your design. You can easily incorporate interesting branches, such as curly willow or white birch, as well as holly, holly berries or ilex berries and run them down the length of the table.”
Bring on the glitz and glamour
The holidays are a time to sparkle and shine, so consider incorporating some glitter into your holiday table. To give your table an extra dash of sparkle, Skaff suggests decorating with holiday ornament balls in a variety of colors or natural pinecones displaying a glittered or snowcapped finish.
Create a garland table runner
According to Sally Morse, director of creative services for Hunter Douglas, the leading name in custom window fashions, clementines add a cheerful, sunshine color to cold winter months. She suggests creating a lemon and clementine leaf garland to place across the center of the table. “The garland can be made with lemon leaves, floral wire and a small rope with real lemons and clementines placed on top of the leaf runner,” she explains.
Another idea Morse offers is to layer clementines on a glass cake stand with sprints of mint or cranberries.
