Crispy panko tofu bites

This dish can be served as an appetizer or as a lovely side dish. Serve alongside the spicy soy dipping sauce and dip your heart out!

Crispy panko tofu bites recipe

Yield 4 servings as an appetizer or side dish

Ingredients:

For crispy tofu bites

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, cayenne pepper or Chinese five spice blend (optional for seasoning panko)
  • Vegetable oil

For dipping sauce

  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2-3 teaspoons chili garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Directions:

For crispy tofu bites

  1. After the tofu has been pressed, cut into 1-inch squares.
  2. Season panko if desired. Dip tofu in egg and then in panko. Make sure all sides are covered in panko.
  3. Add a large frying pan and fill with 1/2 inch vegetable oil. Heat over medium heat until the oil is hot.
  4. Add panko-covered tofu bites to hot oil and cook until crispy and browned on all sides.
  5. Serve with sauce.

For sauce

  1. Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl.
