Restaurant copycat: Auntie Anne’s pretzels

After a day of shopping, it’s impossible to walk by the food court and not start salivating as soon as you smell Auntie Anne’s famous pretzels. If the craving hits and you’re stuck at home, don’t worry! We’ve got the top secret recipe here so you can recreate your favorite warm pretzel without going out.

These soft baked pretzels taste just like the ones you buy at the mall, except you don’t need to deal with snotty cashiers and crowds! We paired ours with this spicy beer dipping sauce, but you can sub in your favorite (or just eat them warm right out of the oven!).

Yields about 6 pretzels

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • Sea salt

Directions:

  1. Heat the milk in a microwave safe dish until warm (110 degrees F).
  2. Mix the milk and yeast together and let bubble for about 5–10 minutes. Once bubbled, mix in 1 cup of flour and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Stir to combine. Mix in the remaining 1-1/4 cups of flour, salt and 2 tablespoons butter.
  3. Lightly flour a hard surface and knead the dough until soft (no longer sticky). Place in an oiled bowl and place in a warm spot until doubled in size, about an hour.
  4. Punch the dough down and roll into 6 pieces. Roll the 6 pieces of dough into 30-inch long ropes (the longer the better) and then fold into a pretzel shape. Mix the baking soda with water and dip the pretzels into the baking soda.
  5. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet with nonstick baking spray. Place the pretzels on the baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes.
  6. Melt the butter and brush over each pretzel. Serve warm.
