In a pickle: How to feed a vegan

Having a vegan over for dinner and stressed about what to make for dinner and dessert? Fear not — we have tips and ideas on feeding a vegan!

Vegans do not eat animals or any type of animal products, including eggs and dairy. Since non-vegans’ diets consist mostly of meat and dairy products, it can be tough to know what to make if a vegan is coming over for dinner.

Tip: Before deciding on what meal to make, ask your vegan friend if there are any specific dietary requirements you should know about. For example, some vegans avoid certain wines, don’t eat refined sugar and/or avoid honey. It’s best to know all the details before preparing your meal.

What do vegans eat?

Vegans eat foods that come from the earth, for the most part. These foods include fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, legumes, whole grains and seeds. Some grocers now carry foods that are “vegan-friendly,” including cookies, ice cream and cheese.

A few final tips…

  • Don’t make a big deal out of the dinner. In other words, talk to your vegan friend about allergies or additional foods they may not eat and go from there. No need to talk about how difficult it was to find a recipe or ask a bunch of questions as to why they’re vegan.
  • Leave a few vegan goodies out on the table to snack on. A fruit or veggie tray, vegan cookies or trail mix are some suggestions.
  • Ask them to bring the wine. Since vegans may not drink certain wines, simply ask them to bring a bottle of their choice to enjoy!

And some vegan statistics…

According to Statistic Brain,

  • 1 million Americans are vegan.
  • 7.3 million Americans are vegetarian.
  • Top vegan/vegetarian city is Portland, Oregon.
