Halloween surprise cake recipe

Serves about 12

Ingredients:

  • 2 boxes white cake mix, plus ingredients asked for on the box
  • 2 cans super dark chocolate frosting
  • 1 can vanilla whipped frosting
  • Red food coloring
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Piping bag
  • Black icing gel
  • About 1/2 cup mini-chocolate chips

Directions:

1

Mix cake into different shades of orange

Mix cake batter according to directions on box, then divide the batter evenly into four separate bowls.

To give the inside a really 3D, gradient orange, we mixed a few different shades together. We did this by adding different drops of red and yellow together to get three different shades of orange, leaving one bowl uncolored.

If you want, you can just go with one shade of orange to make it simpler.

2

Swirl oranges together

Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans. Using a spoon, swirl the different color cake mixes together in each cake pan until each one is filled 3/4 full.

3

Bake cakes and let cool

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake cakes for about 38-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Let cool on a wire cooling rack for at least an hour or until cool enough to frost.

4

Frost and add chocolate chips

Level off the top of one cake to make sure it stacks perfectly. Then liberally frost the top of the cake. Carefully place the second cake on top.

Using a cake spatula, spread the rest of the frosting over the cakes, smoothing it out after each addition.

Sprinkle the top edge of the cake with mini chocolate chips.

5

Pipe ghosts

To make the mini ghosts, scoop the white frosting into a piping bag. Add a small tip and pipe little swirls to the top of the cake.

Add black icing gel to make faces on each ghost.

Then cut the cake and enjoy!
