Whole wheat dinner rolls recipe
Yields 9 rolls
Ingredients:
- 2-1/4 teaspoons active yeast
- 1 cup warm water, divided
- 1-1/2 tablespoons maple syrup, divided
- 1-1/2 cups white whole wheat flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter, divided
Directions:
- Combine the yeast, 1/4 cup of the warm water and 1/2 tablespoon maple syrup in a small bowl. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-7 minutes until frothy.
- Add the flours and salt to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook.
- Combine the remaining water, syrup, egg and 1 tablespoon of the melted butter in another small bowl. Whisk together.
- Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the bowl of the mixer with the flour. Turn the mixer on to a medium-low speed and slowly add the water mixture in the other bowl.
- Mix for about 2-3 minutes until a ball of dough forms.
- Grease a bowl, transfer the dough ball to the bowl, cover with a towel and let rise in a warm spot for 25-30 minutes.
- Remove the dough from the bowl, punch it down and divide into 9 equal balls.
- Grease a 9 x 9-inch baking dish or a pie dish. Place the 9 balls of dough in the dish next to each other, cover with a towel and let rise again for 15-20 more minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Brush the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter on top of the rolls and bake for 10-12 minutes until they are starting to brown on the edges.
- Remove from the oven and serve warm.
