Melty, cheesy, pull-apart pizza bread

Fresh pizza dough is rolled out, filled with tomato sauce and cheeses and then cut into rolls. Once baked, these rolls get topped with lots of fresh basil and are served with a side of sauce for dunking.

Who doesn’t love pizza? I know we sure love it in my house and usually pick one night a week to enjoy it. These pizza rolls are just that: pizza that is rolled up. In this version I kept it vegetarian, but you can add any ingredients you desire, such as pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, sausage — the list goes on. We enjoyed ours topped generously with fresh basil and with a side of pizza sauce. Look for freshly prepared pizza dough at your local grocer to save time.

Pull-apart pizza bread recipe

Serves 8-10

Ingredients:

  • 1 ball fresh, homemade or store-bought pizza dough
  • 1 cup pizza sauce (plus extra for serving)
  • 1-1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasonings
  • 1 large handful fresh basil leaves, chopped

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F, and line a medium baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about a 1/4- to 1/2-inch thickness.
  3. Evenly spread the pizza sauce onto the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  4. Sprinkle 1 cup of the mozzarella, grated Parmesan and Italian seasonings on top of the sauce.
  5. Roll up the dough (as if you were making cinnamon rolls) as tightly as possible.
  6. With a sharp knife, cut the roll into circles, and place them in the baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of mozzarella over the tops of the rolls.
  7. Bake for 20 minutes or until the dough is cooked completely and the cheese has melted.
  8. Garnish with lots of fresh basil, and serve with the extra pizza sauce.
