Shake, shake, shake things up for dessert this summer. Get the whole family involved in the fun, and make sorbet in a bag with only a few items and a bit of shaking.
How often have you tried to entertain your kids and serve them a fun treat at the same time? Now you can get them involved in the fun by making sorbet in a bag.
This activity (and dessert) can be accomplished with some baggies, ice and rock (ice cream) salt. Pick from your favorite fruit juices to create a personalized flavor. I decided to make peach sorbet in a bag for this sweet (and fun) treat.
All you need is a bag of ice, rock salt…
… and a bag of fruit juice.
Put ’em together, and shake, shake, shake.
For a creamier option, add 1/2 cup of milk or cream and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the mix for each 1/2 cup of juice you use.
Better things come to those who wait — just a little. After all the shaking is done, pop the sorbet baggie into the freezer. An extra 30 minutes (or longer) of freezer time will help harden the mixture a bit.
Peach sorbet in a bag recipe
Serves 1
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup peach nectar or peach juice
- 2 ice cube trays
- 6 tablespoons rock salt (sometimes called ice cream salt)
- 1 (gallon-size) zippered baggie
- 1 (pint-size) zippered baggie
- 1/2 cup cream (optional)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
Directions:
- Add the peach nectar to the smaller baggie. Press out all the air, and zip it closed. If you’re using the cream and sugar, then add that to the bag at this time as well.
- Add the ice cubes and rock salt to the larger baggie.
- Place the smaller baggie inside the larger baggie, press out all the air, and zip it closed.
- Grab either the corners or the top and bottom edges of the larger baggie, and shake it continuously for about 5 minutes. You might want to wrap a thin towel around the large baggie before shaking it.
- The juice in the smaller baggie will firm into a consistency like sorbet. Place the smaller baggie with the sorbet in the freezer for about 30 minutes or longer.
- Scoop the sorbet out of the baggie and into a bowl.
- Serve immediately.
Shake, shake, shake your dessert.
