How to make a tomatillo martini

Ever wonder what you can do with a tomatillo other than eating it? How about drinking it? Yes, it is possible to drink this tangy member of the tomato family.

Tomatillo martini

Ingredients:

    t
  • 4 medium-size, semiripe tomatillos
  • t

  • 1 cup vodka
  • t

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • t

  • 1/2 cup sweet vermouth
  • t

  • 1 teaspoon Grand Marnier (optional)
  • t

  • 2-3 fresh mint leaves
  • t

  • 5 ice cubes
  • t

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (for martini glass)
  • t

  • Dish of sugar (for martini glass)

Directions:

  1. Chill a martini glass in the freezer.
  2. t

  3. Remove the skin of the tomatillos and wash them thoroughly, removing the underlying glue completely.
  4. t

  5. Cut the tomatillos into quarter pieces and put them into a food processor. Run the food processor until the tomatillos are completely crushed.
  6. t

  7. Strain the tomatillo puree, then squeeze all the tomatillo juice out of it (don’t discard the pulp since you can use it in soups).

  9. Strain the tomatillo juice at least three times so that none of the seeds from the tomatillo make it into the martini.

  11. Remove the martini glass from the freezer and line the rim with lemon juice.

  13. Press the glass upside down into the sugar dish so that the rim becomes well coated with sugar.

  15. Add the ice, the mint leaves and all the liquid ingredients into a martini shaker. Shake well.

  17. Pour the cocktail into the martini glass and serve immediately.
