3 Hot dog topping recipes

Why just top your hot dog with the ordinary toppings when you can have something extraordinary in a matter of minutes? These three toppings have quick preparation time and will make you the star of any BBQ party.

Hot dogs are the quintessential summer and BBQ food. Typical toppings include ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, and onions. At my house, we like to jazz up the hot dogs a little bit to add tons of new flavors and textures.

The next time you choose one of these unique toppings for your hot dog, you will be blown away at how great they taste. Plus, with minimal preparation time, there is no excuse why you wouldn’t want to try these delicious toppings.

Mango bacon salsa-covered hot dogs

This mango bacon salsa is sweet and savory thanks to the flavorful bacon and the sweet mango. This salsa is easy to make and adds a whole lot of flavor to a typical hot dog.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 3 slices bacon
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 large ripe mango, seed removed, peeled and chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 4 hot dogs

Directions:

  1. Cook the bacon slices on the skillet until crispy. Drain excess fat and crumble the bacon.
  2. Combine the bacon with the paprika, chili powder and cayenne pepper.
  3. In medium bowl, stir together the bacon mixture, mango and red onion. Add lime juice; toss gently.
  4. Prepare the hot dogs according to package directions.
  5. Place a hot dog in the center of a hot dog bun.
  6. Top the four hot dogs with an even amount of the mango bacon salsa.

Pickled habanero onion-topped hot dog

Onions aren’t so unique to be put on a hot dog, but this fun twist on onions brings this hot dog to a whole new level. You won’t want to stop at just one.

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 habanero chile, seeds removed
  • 1/3 large red onion, peeled, halved, cut into 1/8-inch-thick slices
  • 2 hot dog buns
  • 2 hot dogs

Directions:

  1. Combine the water, lime juice, vinegar, sugar, salt and habanero chile in a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  3. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and pour the lime juice mixture over the onions. Stir together.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, occasionally stirring the mixture.
  5. Prepare the hot dogs according to package directions.
  6. Place a hot dog in the center of a hot dog bun.
  7. Top the 2 hot dogs with an even amount of the habanero onion mixture.

Indian-spiced onion relish hot dogs

This relish is very unique and incredibly tasty. All of the spices go together to create a burst of spicy sweet flavor.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/8 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

  1. Combine the onion, ketchup, lemon juice, mustard, honey, cayenne pepper, paprika, garam masala, cumin, salt and pepper.
  2. Stir until well combined.
  3. Prepare the hot dogs according to package directions.
  4. Place a hot dog in the center of a hot dog bun.
  5. Top the 4 hot dogs with an even amount of the Indian-spiced relish.
