A candy-filled Rice Krispies Treat that’s out of this world

This Rice Krispies Treat globe comes complete with a hollow center you can fill with handfuls of your favorite candy.

While the globe might look complicated to make, it’s actually quite easy with the help of 2 identical-size cereal bowls.

Start by melting your butter (or coconut oil for a dairy-free option) and marshmallows, then stirring in some blue food coloring. Make it a shade or two darker than you want your finished product to be, as it will look lighter with the Rice Krispies mixed in.

Stir in the Rice Krispies 2 cups at a time, until everything is well mixed and all the cereal is coated in the ooey-gooey blue marshmallow mix.

Grease your cereal bowls and your hands with more butter or coconut oil. The better-greased your bowls are, the easier it will be to remove the globe. Use your fingers to press the Rice Krispies Treats into the bowls. You want to mimic the shape of the bowls, leaving the centers hollow and having the Rice Krispies Treats rise a bit above the rims of the bowls.

Fill 1 of the Rice Krispies Treat bowls with your favorite candy. I chose M&M’s because chocolate goes so well with Rice Krispies Treats, and the candy coating helps keep them from melting as the globe cools.

Place the other bowl upside down on top of the candy-filled one.

Press down firmly until the bowls are touching, and then let the globe cool for at least 1 hour. I stuck mine in the refrigerator.

Carefully pull 1 of the bowls off the globe. You can use the handle of a spoon or fork to pry the bowls apart if you need to.

Pull the second bowl off the globe. If you’re having difficulty getting it off, then a thin, flexible frosting knife can be wiggled around between the bowl and the globe to help separate them.

Once you have the globe free from the bowls, you can place it onto a glass to frost on the continents. Use a #16 star tip to pipe a pattern of stars in the general shapes of continents.

A sharp knife can slice wedges out of the globe and reveal the sweet surprise in the center.

What candy is at the center of your world?

Serves 12

Ingredients and supplies:

For the Rice Krispies Treats

  • 4 tablespoons butter or coconut oil, plus additional for greasing
  • 16 ounces marshmallows
  • Blue food coloring (I used Wilton icing color in royal blue)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 2 large cereal bowls (same size)
  • 1-2 cups M&M’s or your favorite candy

For the frosting

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Green food coloring (I used Wilton icing color in kelly green)

Directions:

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter or coconut oil.
  2. Add the marshmallows, and stir regularly until they are completely melted.
  3. Stir in the blue food coloring until the color is slightly darker than you want it.
  4. Stir in the Rice Krispies, 2 cups at a time, until they are well mixed with the melted marshmallows.
  5. Grease the bowls well with coconut oil or butter.
  6. Grease your hands, and press 1/2 the Rice Krispies mix into each bowl, working your way up the sides so the centers are hollow. The treats should rise about 1/8-1/4 inch above the rim of each bowl.
  7. Fill the hollow of 1 bowl of Rice Krispies Treat with the candy.
  8. Place the other bowl upside down on top of the candy-filled bowl.
  9. Press down firmly until the bowls are touching.
  10. Let the treat cool for at least 1 hour.
  11. Carefully pull the bowls off the globe, using a flexible metal frosting spatula to separate them if necessary.
  12. Beat the butter, powdered sugar and green food coloring to make a nice, stiff icing.
  13. Use a #16 tip to pipe stars in the general shapes of continents. You can use a glass as a stand for the globe while you work.
  14. Let the frosting dry and harden before serving, at least 1 hour.
