Ways to get more avocado into your diet

by

Avocados often get left out of our diets either because of the myth that they’re bad for us or simply because we don’t know how to incorporate them into our daily meals. Bring an end to this pattern of avocado avoidance with these ideas for using them from breakfast through to dinner.

Why avocados belong in your diet

During the fat-avoidance diet craze, avocados were given a bad rap. But the myth that avocados are bad for us needs to come to an end. It’s true, they are high in fat, but they are high in the good fats that are crucial to your body’s health. They are also a source of 20 essential nutritents, such as potassium, fibre and folic acid. Plus, they have a soft and nutty quality unlike anything else in the fruits and vegetables family, so they hold a unique place in the cooking department. You really have nothing to lose and so much to gain when you incorporate avocados into your daily meals!

At breakfast

Although many people think of the avocado as a vegetable, it actually happens to be a fruit. And what’s the best way to have fruit in the morning? Smoothies! Avocados add a creamy texture and nutty flavour to any morning smoothie. To ensure you always have them on hand, cut an avocado into cubes, and place the pieces in a zip-lock bag. Store the bag in the freezer, and simply toss three or four chunks into your blended beverage in the morning or for a quick snack.

For lunch

Avocados are a great way to add healthy fats to any lunch. They are a key ingredient in a good Cobb salad, and they add a delicious creaminess to sandwiches. You can create your own avocado spread for homemade wraps, or try a turkey, avocado and strawberry panini for something totally new and exciting.

As an appetizer

When at their prime state of ripeness, avocados mash beautifully into a creamy mixture. With just a few extra ingredients, you can create a tasty guacamole to serve with chips or veggies at your next gathering.

Dinnertime

Though avocados have no trouble being the focus of a dish, they also do well as a subtle addition. When added to other vegetables, herbs and spices, they form a delightful salsa that’s great on burgers or as chicken or beef toppers. Not sure you’re sold on the idea? Try a steak and avocado corn salsa, and see what you think. Or if you want your avocados to play more of a starring role, whip up a hearty salad with either quinoa or lettuce as its base, and toss in some pieces of avocado. After all, why shouldn’t you be allowed to satisfy your taste buds and your body’s needs at the same time?
