6 Ways to enjoy your eggs

Are you trying to incorporate delicious and nutritious eggs into your diet more frequently? Enjoy them on a more regular basis with these simple cooking methods.

Scrambled

This is an unbelievably easy way to enjoy your eggs. Simply crack eggs into a pan with a dollop of butter, a splash of milk and a pinch of salt. Stir regularly to completely break up the eggs. You can also mix in some shredded cheese, bacon bits, herbs, spices and even your favourite grilled vegetables. Continue to stir until the eggs achieve the desired consistency, and serve them either on their own or on toast or inside a wrap.

Sunny side up

If you like your yolk to be runny, this is the method for you. Brush a pan with oil, and place it on medium heat. Crack eggs into the pan, and let them cook until the clear colouring disappears from the egg whites. Gently remove the eggs from the pan, being careful not to rupture the yolks.

Over easy or over hard

To enjoy your eggs over easy, begin by frying the eggs in an oiled pan. When the eggs whites are no longer transparent, gently flip the eggs over and let them fry for another 10–15 seconds to allow the yolk side to cook as well. Flip the eggs back over, and serve immediately for over-easy eggs, or allow them to cook longer if you want them over hard, meaning with the yolks entirely solid.

Poached

For very soft eggs, try poaching them. Bring a pot of water to a boil, then reduce it to a simmer. Crack eggs into the water. Cook them for 3–5 minutes, depending on desired firmness of yolk. Enjoy poached eggs on their own, or place them on an English muffin with some ham and hollandaise sauce for eggs Benedict.

Soft boiled

Soft-boiled eggs are achieved by cooking the eggs in their shells in hot water to a point where the whites harden but the yolks stay soft. To make soft-boiled eggs, bring a pot of water to a rapid boil, then, using tongs, place eggs in a single layer in the pot. Cook for 4 minutes, then remove from heat. Place the eggs in a soft-boiled egg container. Crack the top of the egg gently, and remove the top third of the shell to gain access to the egg. Scoop out the insides with a small spoon to eat.

Hard boiled

Hard-boiled eggs are when both the whites and the yolks of the eggs become solid after being boiled in their shells. Place eggs in a pot of cool water, and place the pot on a burner set to medium-high heat. Once the water starts to boil, cover the pot and turn off the burner. Set a timer for 10–12 minutes. When the timer goes off, drain the water and pour cold water over the eggs to help them cool. Once cooled, their shells can be cracked and removed. Hard-boiled eggs can be eaten on their own with a sprinkle of salt or mashed up with mayonnaise, herbs and spices to create egg salad.
