Do you like the taste and texture of sour cream but hate how high it is in fat and calories? Then you’ll be relieved to know there’s a healthy, homemade way to enjoy this scrumptious condiment.
You’ll never have to buy high-fat sour cream again with the help of this simple recipe.
True sour cream has a butterfat content of 18 percent, while light varieties have around 10.5 per cent. This means you’re taking in about 30 to 60 calories for a mere two tablespoons of the stuff, not to mention receiving very little food value! Fortunately this homemade sour cream is made of two simple ingredients that are incredibly good for you, so you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in this scrumptious treat.
Homemade sour cream
Makes 1 cup
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup 0 per cent Greek yogourt
- 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
Directions:
- Place the yogourt and ricotta in a food processor or blender, and mix on high.
- Scoop the mixture into an airtight container, and store it in the fridge until ready to use.
Note: So long as you keep the measurements of ricotta and yogourt relatively equal, you can alter the recipe to make any quantity you need.
Use it everywhere!
Now that you have this healthy homemade version on hand, you’ll certainly want to get as much use out of it as you can. Sour cream is great for adding some moisture to sandwiches and wraps. Try creating a spicy turkey wrap to take with you to work for lunch, or use it to add some creamy goodness to your favourite taco recipes.
Or for a sweet and healthy treat, collect a bowl of your favourite fruits, such as strawberries, peach slices and banana pieces. Stir a few spoonfuls of a sweetener agent such as Splenda, maple syrup or stevia into a bowl of homemade sour cream. Now you have your very own healthy fruit fondue. Dip the fruit into the sweet sour cream, and enjoy!
