How to roast chestnuts

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…” That might be how the song goes, but you don’t need an open fire to enjoy the goodness of chestnuts. You can easily make them in your own kitchen this holiday season!

There’s nothing more Christmasy than listening to “The Christmas Song” while snacking on homemade chestnuts. And that dream is easy to accomplish with the help of this simple guide!

Ingredients:

  • Fresh chestnuts in their shells

Directions:

1

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

2

Rinse the chestnuts, and pat them dry with a paper towel.

3

Using a sharp knife, cut an “X” into the rounded top of each chestnut. Make sure you cut through the shell well so it’s easy for the chestnut to pop open.

4

Place the chestnuts flat sides down on a baking tray.

5

Bake them in the oven for 25–30 minutes.

6

When the chestnuts are done, the tops will pop open at the “X.” Take them out of the oven, and let them cool.

7

Peel the skins off the chestnuts as you would peel the shell off a hard-boiled egg.

8

Enjoy immediately, or transfer the chestnuts to a resealable container to snack on later.

Note

It’s natural to get a few bad chestnuts in the batch. They’re dark in colour and hard to the touch. Simply discard them, and enjoy the rest!
