After being in a relationship for five years I have never been happier to embrace my single identity. But since embracing my power stance, I’ve come to realize that the “single girl” label is stigmatized in our society.
As I scroll through the internet on a daily basis, I see headlines telling me I am insufficient because I am single. Titles like “single people finally have something over couples” piss me off. As a loud and proud self-proclaimed bad bitch, I see it as my duty to inform other women that we are whole as individuals. No, I don’t need a man to cook my dinner. No, I don’t need a man to buy me the expensive purses I want. I can kill my own spiders (or as I prefer, catch and release). I can shovel my own driveway and I sure as hell can make myself happy, feel satisfied and fulfilled and lead a glorious life without a man.
I’m not hating on men
They are beautiful and can make a nice addition to an already satisfying existence. However, women should not base their happiness, sufficiency or achievements in life on the presence, or lack or presence, of a significant other. So this Valentine’s Day, don’t let society make you feel like you have to be bitter because you are alone. Valentine’s Day is about love. Why does it have to be romantic love? But let’s face it, I am romantically in love with myself. I think all women should be.
I would like to challenge the dichotomy of Valentine’s Day being for lovers
If you’re not in a relationship, you don’t have to be bitter or get together with your friends and lament as to why you are in this “subpar” situation. This doesn’t have to be the episode of Friends where they burn pictures of their exes. Although I do hope firemen will show up at my house. I propose we all embrace the single life and recognize we don’t need to be in a relationship, or to follow society’s prescribed norms and timelines in order to be productive and amazing members of society.
Why not make yourself a boss meal for one?
I’ve put together a menu for you so you don’t have to think about it. I prepared an herbed Cornish game hen and a creamy truffle risotto with roasted broccoli and manchego cheese. For dessert I decided on a 5-minute microwave brownie, because you don’t want to spend all night cooking.
Once your meal is ready, pour yourself a glass of some expensive booze, put on your Netflix and don’t forget to take a selfie to remind yourself that you are a badass single woman.
