UPDATE: Scientists now believe that mystery creature is actually a tongue-eating louse. Experts say the #tunagate creature is the infant form of the parasite that lives inside a fish, entering through its gills and attaching itself to its host’s tongue.
Forget the lunchroom bullies — bringing a tuna sandwich for lunch just got a whole lot scarier thanks to a mystery creature.
Zoe Butler, a woman from England, got a nasty surprise when she opened a can of Princes tuna — and saw something looking back at her!

The mystery creature has no limbs, two beady black eyes and a body that looks like some sort of internal organ, or at the very least a fluid-filled sac. Basically, it ain’t pretty.

Zoe reached out to her local newspaper to see if it could figure out what the blob creature was. Personally I would have just sworn off tuna/canned goods for life, but I guess there’s something to be said for practicality. The newspaper spoke with Dr. Hany Elsheikha, associate professor of veterinary parasitology at the University of Nottingham, who said it could be a form of juvenile crab.
In the meantime, Zoe also contacted Princes, who says it’s investigating. What she doesn’t want from the company? Any compensation — and especially not a lifetime supply of tuna. Considering that a can of Princes tuna is where she found the critter, can you really blame her?
