If you’re squeamish at the thought of eating a fast-food Big Mac, wait until you see this crazy burger from Japan.
Served in the café at the Orbi Yokohama Museum in Yokohama, a city south of Tokyo, this burger is not for the faint of heart. From its dark black bun dyed with bamboo charcoal to the fried frog legs stretching over the edges of the sandwich, the burger was created to complement the museum’s exhibit on deadly poisonous animals, including certain frogs. Yum?

While the bun looks scary, it’s the whole (yes, whole) deep-fried frog that really gives me pause. Face, stomach, arms and, of course, the legs, are nestled on a bed of lettuce alongside some soy sauce-marinated chicken, which is there for “flavor comparison.” Um, I don’t know about you, but the flavor comparison I’d probably be making is, “Gee, this chicken sure is a heck of a lot more enjoyable than the deep-fried frog face!” But maybe that’s just me?
Also, as a sidenote: Since when is anything you stuff between two buns a burger? I thought there had to be a patty of some sort. If I stick a piece of rib-eye between two buns, isn’t that just a steak sandwich? I guess I just feel a little bad for burgers at large for being lumped in with something like this, which is essentially a pond-critter sandwich.
Anyway, the froggy sandwich costs 1,000 yen, or $8.40, which I guess isn’t a bad price for a gourmet burger. Then again, if forced to choose, I think a dollar menu double cheese burger would suit me just fine, thank you very much.
