Kraft issues huge Mac & Cheese recall — check your boxes

by

The sound of “noooooo!” heard around the country today is due to the massive Kraft Macaroni & Cheese recall that was announced on Monday.

Kraft Foods Group, Inc. has chosen to recall 242,000 cases of the beloved blue boxes because of a risk that they may contain small pieces of metal. Yikes! Metal? In a statement, a Kraft spokesperson said that “a piece of stainless steel got wedged in a metal piece of equipment, which may have generated friction that resulted in small pieces of metal potentially falling into the product.”

Although the company “deeply apologize[s] to the consumers” it has disappointed, this news comes on the heels of a similar recall less than four years ago, when Kraft recalled 137,000 Velveeta Shells & Cheese single-serve cups.

With so many alternative macaroni and cheese options these days, I am sure consumers are increasingly faced with the question: Is our favorite mac ‘n’ cheese still worth it?

For now, check your boxes of 7.25-ounce packages of “original” flavor with “best when used by” dates of Sept. 18, 2015 through Oct. 11, 2015.

Fortunately no injuries have been reported. It seems Kraft got ahead of the issue — for now — but it leaves a pretty bad taste in our mouths.
