Pancake love notes are a super-cute way to start the day

Surprise your kids with a cute breakfast love note written in pancakes.

You will love the delight on your child’s face when they see their edible love note. You can personalize the message or simply write “I love you.”

Make your batter, and use it to fill a squeeze bottle. This recipe is an extra-thick one, so you can easily write delicate messages, and you need your burner on medium-low (mine was at a 3) to avoid burning the pancakes as you create your art. To make a lacy heart, start by drawing a basic heart shape.

Add some loops inside the heart, making sure they touch the edges all the way around.

Now add dots to the outside of the heart. Remove the heart from the pan once it’s easy to pick up with a spatula without breaking. You might need a few practice pieces before you figure out when they are done.

For an “I,” you can simply write it in the pan as is.

Additional words in cursive need to be written backward to appear in the right direction once flipped. I found it helped to write one normally and then flip it over and copy it once it was backward.

If that’s too complicated, you can always just write it normally and then serve it with the browned side down. That’s what I did in my first batch of recipe testing, but I found I prefer the contrast of the darker words and patterns.

Draw any other shapes you want, such as flowers or squiggles.

You can make this breakfast extra fun for toddlers by including some jam for dipping.

My son was thrilled by his special pancake letter and loved getting to dip his words and hearts.

He cleared his plate — not a common occurrence around here lately — and quickly asked for more “love cakes.” Next time I make these, I plan to let him help me draw some designs of his own.

Pancake love notes recipe

This pancake batter recipe is specially designed to not spread out so you can make pretty, lacy letters, flowers and hearts. The batter contains butter, so you don’t need to spread that on the cooked pancakes, but feel free to serve with a little bowl of syrup or jam for dipping.

Serves 5

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 1 tablespoon white sugar
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1-1/4 cups whole milk
• 1 egg
• 3 tablespoons melted butter
• Syrup or jam (optional) 

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and sugar. This is important to prevent clogging the squeeze bottle.
2. Add the salt, milk, egg and melted butter, and mix well until completely smooth and lump free.
3. Heat a nonstick pan on medium-low (I used setting 3 of 10 on my stove).
4. Pour the batter into a squeeze bottle, and draw your cursive words or shapes.
5. Once the batter is completely cooked, use a pancake turner to remove the pancake, flipping it onto a plate.
6. Arrange your love note on a large plate or platter, and serve with a little bowl of syrup or jam if you like.
