Taco Bell and Pizza Hut latest to jump on the natural foods bandwagon

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut have some big news this week.

Following in the footsteps of Panera Bread earlier this month, the two chains have announced that they’re removing a number of artificial colors and flavors from their food.

The changes range from eliminating “black pepper flavor” in favor of… um, well, regular black pepper, to removing artificial colors like Yellow No. 6 and Blue No. 1 from their foods. Artificial colors can help foods to look fresh and bright when they aren’t necessarily so, but some have questions about the negative health effects these additives have. And using fake black pepper flavor when you could use real black pepper is just weird, Taco Bell, so kudos.

Pizza Hut, currently testing out its modified menu in select markets, is removing artificial colors and flavors by the end of July.

In the meantime, Taco Bell is removing artificial colors and flavors, high fructose corn syrup (except in its fountain sodas) and unsustainable palm from the menu by the end of this year, with more changes in store through the end of 2017.

Pizza Hut and Taco Bell are both owned by Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to hear a similar announcement from that chain soon too.

In the meantime, it’s good to know that by the end of 2015, your beef Taco Supreme will be flavored with real pepper.
