Ben & Jerry’s celebrates SCOTUS ruling with ‘I Dough, I Dough’ ice cream

Today is a day to celebrate. This morning, as the Supreme Court ruled on national marriage equality, people all over the country erupted with joy. Adults from my childhood, people who helped raise me, took to Facebook and rejoiced. Finally, their respective marriages had been given the respect they deserve. All I want to do is celebrate with them, but I know that there is still so much work to be done. Apparently, Ben & Jerry’s was thinking the exact same thing.

In honor of the Supreme Court ruling, Ben & Jerry’s announced that the classic Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough will be renamed “I Dough, I Dough.” That’s right — Ben & Jerry’s is using their signature flavor. There’s something truly touching about this choice; this flavor has always existed, it has been beautiful from the beginning and the only thing that’s changed is the legal stuff. But the legality is important — it is an official, undeniable step that no one can ignore.

But this isn’t even the best part — 100 percent of the proceeds go to the Human Rights Campaign. In other words, Ben & Jerry’s is honoring this historic day by celebrating and continuing to fight, as they share in the video below. That is what we all need to do. When it comes to gender and sexual freedom in this country, we have a long way to go. This step is an example of what more needs to come. So let’s rejoice, and keep going. And eat some ice cream.
