DIY Chex treat bag gives Halloween a spooky crunch

Fall is a fun time to begin handing out gifts to friends at school and families around the neighborhood, and today’s spooky snack is perfect for any Halloween lover!

Halloween crunch has a perfect blend of salty and sweet, and the DIY bat treat bag will put a smile on anyone’s face. It’s easy to make and super fun to eat. In fact, it’s so easy that it doesn’t even require any cooking!

Ingredients for Halloween crunch:

• Rice Chex cereal
• 1 bag of microwave popcorn
• Melting chocolate (or chocolate candy melts)
• Black sprinkles
• Halloween-colored candies (like Reese’s Pieces)
• Eyeball sprinkles
• Foil
• Nonstick cooking spray
• Cookie sheet

Directions for Halloween crunch:

1. Place foil on your baking sheet.
2. Apply a thin layer of nonstick spray to the foil.
3. Arrange a layer of Chex cereal (as pictured above). The amount of Chex cereal you need depends on the size of your cookie sheet.
4. Add a layer of popcorn over the Chex cereal (as seen above).
5. Add about 1 cup of Halloween-colored candies to the Chex and popcorn.
6. Melt about 1/2 cup of chocolate and drizzle it over the Chex and popcorn.
7. Before the chocolate dries, place the eyeball sprinkles on top of the chocolate.
8. Add the black sprinkles over the entire cookie sheet.
9. The chocolate will eventually dry and keep the Chex, popcorn, candies and sprinkles together. You can place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator to make the chocolate harden more quickly. Once the chocolate is dry, use a spatula (or kids love to do this with their hands) and gently break the Halloween crunch into bite-sized pieces.
10. Add the Halloween crunch to the DIY bat treat bags!

Materials needed for the DIY bat treat bags:

• Clear cone-shaped cellophane treat bags
• Bat wing template (instead of using the tabs, I hand-traced the template as one piece)
• Black or sparkly black card stock
• Black sprinkles
• Halloween candies
• Stapler
• Scissors
• Hot glue (optional) 

Directions:

1. Trace the bat wing template onto black card stock.
2. Add some sprinkles to the very bottom of the bag along with a few Halloween candies.
3. Add a scoop or two of the Halloween crunch to the treat bag.
4. Cut the top of the bag to size, fold over the top edge and staple the treat bag shut.
5. Hot glue or staple the black bat wings to the top of the treat bag and hand them out this October!
