Huge chicken recall expanded: More than 500,000 pounds of product affected

Aspen Foods has announced another major recall due to concerns over salmonella contamination.

In July, the company recalled nearly 2 million pounds of chicken after five people fell ill after eating its salmonella-contaminated products. After further testing of Aspen Foods, the Food Safety and Inspection Service found that more of the company’s frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken had been exposed to the salmonella and needed to be recalled.

In addition to the products recalled over the summer, the company is now recalling approximately 561,000 pounds of its frozen chicken products that appear to be ready to eat. The recalled product was “produced between August 25, 2015 and September 17, 2015 with ‘best if used by’ dates of August 23, 2016 to December 15, 2016,” according to the recall announcement.

The recalled chicken is being sold by 19 brands across the United States, including Acclaim, Antioch Farms, Buckley Farms, Centrella Signature, Chestnut Farms, Family Favorites, Home Dining Selections, Kirkwood, Koch Foods, Market Day, Oven Cravers, Rose, Rosebud Farm, Roundy’s, Safeway Kitchens, Schwan’s, Shaner’s, Spartan and Sysco.

Salmonellosis isn’t usually life threatening, but it can be especially dangerous to those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, infants and people who are already ill. Salmonellosis usually causes abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever.

If you’ve purchased any of the recalled products, you should throw them away or return them at the place you purchased them. You should also make sure to clean any areas in your freezer or kitchen that may have come in contact with the product to prevent cross-contamination.
