Make Halloween monstrously fun with homemade Frankenstein treats

Frankenstein goodies never looked or tasted so good, and they’re easy too. What a fun way to usher in a monster of a holiday.

Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats are anything but scary. They’re delicious and festive and would make a great snack to enjoy before heading out to trick-or-treat or for any type of Halloween gathering.

These treats are a good way to get the kids involved too. Think of the fun you’ll have decorating them. If you’d like, you can turn them into a sort of Halloween pop by adding colorful (but sturdy) straws to the bottoms.

Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats recipe

Yields 18

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 20 minutes | Total time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) bag mini marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies (or other crispy rice cereal)
  • Green food coloring (5-6 drops)
  • 5 ounces chocolate chips
  • 1/2 tablespoon shortening
  • Candy eyes (you can find these at most craft stores or in the baking aisle at the grocery store)
  • 1 tube black cake decorating gel in a piping container (the thinner the tube opening, the better)
  • 36 pieces candy corn to use as Frankenstein’s neck bolts
  • Candy sticks or sturdy straws (about 5 inches long; optional)
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set it aside.
  2. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray, and set it aside.
  3. To a large stockpot or Dutch oven over low heat, add the margarine. When the margarine has melted, add the marshmallows.
  4. Stir the marshmallows occasionally, and when melted, add the food coloring. Mix to combine.
  5. Add the crispy rice cereal to the pot, and mix to combine.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the baking pan, and use your hands to gently press it down evenly across the pan.
  7. Allow the mixture to cool completely before decorating. If you’re in a rush, refrigerate it for 20 minutes or so.
  8. Cut the treats into 3 rows and 6 columns. Each rectangular piece will be the Frankenstein head. Remove from the pan, and place each piece on the baking sheet.
  9. Carefully insert 2 pieces of candy corn (pointed ends inward), 1 on each side, on the bottom portions of the treats. These will be Frankenstein’s neck bolts.
  10. If you’re using candy sticks or straws to transform these into pops, then insert them into the bottom of each treat at this point.
  11. Melt the chocolate chips and shortening in the microwave in 15-second increments, until melted.
  12. Use a spoon to coat the top portion of each rectangle with the chocolate (this will be Frankenstein’s hair, so the chocolate should go about 1/8 of the way down).
  13. Set on the parchment, and allow the chocolate to harden before continuing to decorate.
  14. Add a dab of chocolate to the back of each candy eye, and press it gently but firmly into the treat.
  15. Use the black decorating gel to draw on Frankenstein’s mouth.
