At SheKnows Food, we spend a lot of time reading about — you guessed it — food (and drinks too!). And we’ve come across some stories that are too good to not share. Here are the food items from the week that you don’t want to miss.
1. A new Keurig-style brewer takes the hassle (and fun?) out of home-brewed craft beer
If you’re interested in home-brewing but don’t feel like figuring it out yourself, the PicoBrew is right up your alley. The craft beer-brewing appliance, currently on Kickstarter, would let people use premade ingredient pods from popular craft breweries to make their own 5-liter mini kegs of beer, basically working like a huge K-Cup machine. And let’s face it: We’re usually too lazy to run out to the store to grab a six-pack, so figuring out home-brewing on our own is pretty much out of the question. The PicoBrew is easy, but what about creativity? Instead of “enjoying” a glass of your relative’s home-brewed barbecue banana-smoked porter (weird flavor choice, Uncle Bob), you’ll be drinking a glass of IPA brewed from a pod that tastes identical to what you could purchase from that company in stores. Which sort of raises the question: What’s the point? — Kickstarter

2. The new M&M’S flavor sounds redundantly delicious
M&M’S latest holiday flavor? Hot chocolate. From the candy that “melts in your mouth, not in your hands,” it’ll be interesting to see how they try to differentiate between the flavor of cold chocolate and hot chocolate. Maybe they will melt in your hands? Or perhaps these M&M’S (spotted at Walmart) will have a particularly rich flavor, as they’re made with dark chocolate. Or maybe literally no one will be able to tell the difference between the two, because it’s still just chocolate coated in a candy shell, but now it comes in a cute holiday package. And TBH, if that is the case, we’re still totally getting some, because cute holiday packaging is, like, the most effective marketing strategy of all time. — The Impulsive Buy
3. Chicken Fries are getting a tasty Buffalo makeover
Burger King’s Chicken Fries are getting a fun new upgrade — a dusting of Buffalo spices. The company went with a sprinkling of its Buffalo spice blend instead of a sauce so that the fries are still finger food friendly, but if you’re really feeling panicked about it, you can just get a container of Buffalo sauce on the side for dipping. The Buffalo flavor comes hot on the heals of Fiery Chicken Fries, which were a (different?) spicy iteration of the dish. What will the creative minds at Burger King think up next? Our money’s on Sriracha Chicken Fries. — CNBC

4. Sunk ship’s snack sells for a titanic sum
It turns out a blockbuster movie isn’t the only lucrative thing to come out of the sinking of the Titanic. A single cracker from one of the ship’s lifeboats just sold for a whopping $23,000 (in the meantime, Chipotle is giving out entire burritos for only $3, but we digress). The Pilot cracker, made of flour and water, was part of the lifeboat’s survival kit. One of the people rescued on the boat kept it in an envelope as a souvenir of their cruise vacation, and now, 103 years later, it’s turned out to be quite the investment. Hopefully the same will be true of the mostly crushed half-sleeve of Ritz crackers currently waiting for glory at the bottom of your purse. — Grub Street
5. South Park‘s anti-Yelp episode turned out to be prophetic
After South Park recently aired its grievances over Yelp users’ entitled dining manners, one restaurant in Arizona was inspired to do the same. The owner of Vero Amore, which has two locations in Tucson, has erected a “No Yelpers” banner by the entrances of his restaurants. Even though the establishments have four-plus star ratings, the owner said he still felt that overly entitled Yelp users should be taken to task for being able to tear down restaurants without any evidence to back up their claims, something that can destroy an establishment’s credibility but has little to no consequences for those penning the reviews. But some Yelpers are already acting out over the banner, giving the restaurants one-star reviews and even posting pictures of themselves giving the middle finger to the Yelp page. Pfft — and they say that South Park is just a dumb cartoon show. — Eater
