The annual Cake International competition at the Birmingham NEC is always guaranteed to produce some eye-catching entries and this year was no exception.

Possibly the most jaw-dropping creation is Lara Mason’s effort: a life-sized cake statue of Prince George that stands just under 3 feet tall.

It’s pretty hard to believe this is made of sponge.

The 29-year-old amateur baker spent 30 hours on her royal masterpiece and won a gold award from the Cake International judges

It’s not the first gold award for Lara, who in previous years has won for her cake reproductions of Jennifer Lawrence as her Hunger Games character Katniss Everdeen and Johnny Depp as on-screen pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.

“The feedback from the judges was they loved what I did,” she told BBC News. “But they wanted to see what I could do on a smaller scale because when it’s life sized and you put it on the table, they can’t see all the smaller details and the most important part on a human sculpture is a face. I thought I’d do a child. He’s the most famous child in the world and especially cute as well and very, very current.”

Fancy trying to make a Prince George cake? Here are some of the stages Lara went through on her way to the finished product.

(In the words of Lara herself: “Some of these photos are pretty ‘creepy’… Also remember this cake was for a decorative competition, so therefore won’t be eaten.”)
