Organic food may fit a little better into your grocery budget this holiday season.
Whole Foods says it’ll offer more discounts on produce, seafood, meat and other items at its stores through the next couple of months. It won’t be lowering all of its prices across the board, but it’s trying to lure more of us in with targeted promotions.

Not only that, Whole Foods is rolling out a series of discount stores called 365 by Whole Foods. It’s calling it the Nordstrom Rack of organic groceries, with a line of lower-priced foods. Hopefully shopping there won’t give you that panic attack we usually have when we get that total from the Whole Foods cashier.
It looks like those panic attacks have been scaring too many of us away from the grocery chain — earnings are down for Whole Foods. Meanwhile, there’s growing competition from other grocery chains, because suddenly we all want pesticide-, preservative-, junk-free food — we just don’t want to pay a fortune for it.

So while things look grim and tricky for Whole Paycheck, things are looking brighter for the rest of us. If things keep going the way they are, there could come a day when organics cost the same as conventional food. It’s already starting to happen.
